This partnership has been designed as an innovation platform to develop solutions for improving energy supply services and quality of life in refugee camps.
Acciona Microenergía Foundation (FUNDAME)
FUNDAME was created in November 2008 with the aim of facilitating access to sustainable basic services such as electricity, water and infrastructure for isolated rural areas in developing countries. The core features of FUNDAME’s projects are that they are in line with business strategies, are economically sustainable in the medium term, are focused on isolated rural communities and collaborate with other entities in order to achieve human development objectives.
The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) is the bilateral body for development in Spain. The AECID currently works in 30 countries through a network of Technical Cooperation Offices, Cultural and Training Centres. In Ethiopia, AECID has a Technical Cooperation Office in Addis Ababa that has been in operation since 2007. In this partnership AECID will provide institutional support as well as partially project funding.
Iberdrola is a world leader in wind energy and one of the world’s top energy suppliers. The largest social development project in which Iberdrola has participated is “Luz para todos” (Light for All) in Brazil. Iberdrola’s participation in the project is based upon its organizational, technical, logistics and purchasing capacities.
The Innovation and Technology for Development Centre (itdUPM) is the research centre leading the project. Acting as a partnership broker among the parties involved, itdUPM will work throughout the project to: provide members of the University staff as focal points in the field in the Shire region when necessary; offer different skills from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) through their longstanding tradition of conducting collaborative research with industry, as well as providing appropriate facilities for testing and calibrating equipment.

UNHCR is our partner in the project we are developing in Shire (Ethiopia):
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action for the worldwide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. UNHCR’s primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.
UNHCR’s role within the partnership will be to provide a problem diagnosis and evaluate the pilot project. UNHCR will support the partnership in applying for further funding from institutions such as the Humanitarian Innovation Fund in order to scale-up and replicate the work of the partnership.

NRC is an independent humanitarian organisation with around 900 experts from all over the world, ready to deploy at a moment’s notice to support the UN and local authorities in humanitarian crises.
NRC will be supporting in the implementation of the pilot project in Shire Camps, specially in logistic -reception and management of materials-, sustainability -refugees participation, measuring impact…- and training.
